Photograph of Emily Roberts, Harry's mother. Harry always acknowledged his debt to her because of her emphasis on his education. Emily came from Gympie. Harry's parents were not well-off. Harry's father, Henry Emmanuel Roberts, was a storeman at Herzberg and Company at the time of the depression. He lost his job in the early 1930s, when the company went bankrupt. In 1932 or 1933 Harry bought a Morris sedan for his father, so that he could do his work as a door-to-door salesman for Rawleigh products. When John Roberts was a child, he did the rounds with his grandfather in the Morris around West End and Highgate Hill. Henry Emmanuel Roberts continued in this job until at least the late 1940s.

Photograph of the Church of England Grammar School Pocket Kings Christmas Greetings 1939: The 'Pocket King' was the longest of the three swimming qualifications. The first was 'the Viking' (four lengths of 25 metre pool), the second was 'the River King' (16 lengths of 25 metre pool. This was the prerequisite for rowing), the third was 'the Pocket King'. This involved swimming from one side of the CEGS Pocket in Norman Creek (approximately one mile in length). This event was held once a year and was cancelled when the creek became too polluted in the 1950s. When John was a senior this was no longer being done, but he swam it when he was in the prep school in the 1940s. Students were divided into several groups with seniors in each group. Rowing boats were on the creek for safety and there were about 10 to 12 students in each group. Top left photograph: Arthur Young (master).

Harry and Hilda bought this house to accommodate additional borders at the school (subsequently demolished). In Harry's time as headmaster, a contract was given to the headmaster to run the school and a lump sum came with this. Harry sold this house after World War Two. Photograph of the CEGS main oval: the old sports pavilion. It was burnt down one evening around 1950. John Roberts was at school when it happened and he remembers the master telling the boys to all sit still and continue doing their homework while the fire brigade put the fire out. The fire brigade pumped the water from Norman Creek. It was thought that the fire happened because boys used to smoke in the shed where the mowers were stored.

Albert Williams (Hilda's uncle, her mother Clara's brother). 'Dear Clara, just a few lines hoping they find you well. I am still having a splendid time now that the weather is getting warmer. I hope to better it. Today a party of us went for a row on the river and had a good time. I have taken a keen interest in all sports and at night time I go for a long run to train myself for the Cross country run which comes off in a few days time. What do you think of the photo of myself. I have such a lot to send that I don't know how I shall find the time to write so many. In a few days time we go away on six days leave which will be great, provided the weather is fine. Well, remember me to all and little Hilda. I shall be sending her a photo later. Brother Bert.'

Photograph: Garth, Leonie, Allen, Neil, Barbara May (on the back of the photograph): Nellie May was Clara Williams' sister. Sidney May (her husband) was a lecturer in music and Hilda's music teacher. He was a very important influence on Hilda's musical career. The May family lived across the road from Almondsbury house in Ipswich. Nellie was a very keen gardener. These are three of their children (but it's not certain which three they are out of the five names on the back of the photograph). Garth May became a doctor and practised in Woolloongabba. He was a keen photographer in later years.

Photograph: 'Hilda Vincent in Tasmania': Hilda is in the second back row on the right side of the car. Clara, Hilda's mother is in the same row on the left side of the car. In the middle of this row is likely to be Auntie Nic. Auntie Nic paid for this trip to Tasmania and bought Hilda Vincent a camera to take photographs during the trip, so some of the photographs of the trip were taken by her.
