Scope and content

A large collection comprising photographs, correspondence, biographical information, publications, certificates, newspaper clippings and other personal papers of Henry Emmanuel Roberts, known as Harry Roberts. Includes family photographs as well as images of Toowoomba Grammar School and many from his time as headmaster of Church of England Grammar School, Brisbane. Also correspondence and other papers relating to his career and family life and his wife Hilda.

Administrative / Biographical history

Harry Roberts was born in Brisbane in 1900. He attended Brisbane Grammar School, becoming dux in 1918. He studied at the University of Queensland and began his teaching career at Ipswich Grammar School. He also taught at Scots College, Sydney and was headmaster at Toowoomba Grammar School before becoming headmaster of the Church of England Grammar School (later Anglican Church Grammar School) in Brisbane from 1947 to 1969. He was an educational reformer who broadened the curriculum at the Church of England Grammar School, Brisbane, and raised the stature of the profession of teaching.
