Scope and content

This collection consists of 112 works of art, including cartoons, caricatures and paintings, by Arthur Hingston. The majority of the cartoons appeared in the Brisbane Truth, either as editorial cartoons or as illustrations to news stories. Box 13084 contains many of Hingston's small format portrait cartoons and caricatures including images of notable Queensland politicians, judges and businessmen.

Administrative / Biographical history

Arthur James Hingston was born in London in 1874. He came to Queensland with his parents when he was nine months old. From a very early age he showed great artistic ability. He studied at the Brisbane Technical College under Godfrey Rivers and Miss Chester-Master. In 1902, after a brief period as illustrator with the "Truth" and with the "Worker" he left for London where he was appointed to the staff of the "Daily Mail" as an illustrator and cartoonist.
