Scope and content

Seven reels of 8mm film and 12 digital video files containing film footage taken by Alfred James Hoole mostly during the 1950s. Much of the footage shows footage filmed by Alfred Hoole during trips taken to survey dental health in Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities in 1951-1952. There is also footage of the Brookfield district, Palm Island, the royal visit of 1954, a dental conference at Lake Eacham in north Queensland and the Aloomba district near Gordonvale, as well as a number of small segments of film showing Queensland scenes. Some of the film footage has been edited with explanatory title pages and captions by Alfred Hoole's son Geoff with the assistance of Geoff's colleague Joan Frew. The collection also includes 5 photographs and papers relating to Alfred Hoole's career.

Administrative / Biographical history

Alfred James Hoole was born in 1908 in Ingham and lived with his family on a cane farm at Aloomba, near Gordonvale. Alf left school to work on the farm and then was apprenticed to a dentist who encouraged him to return to school at Charters Towers where he completed his matriculation. Alf then did the 4 year dentistry course run by the Joint Board of Dental Services and then obtained his B.D.Sc. (Hons) in 1932. In 1946 he was appointed Superintendent of the Brisbane Dental Hospital. In 1951-1952 he lead teams on a number trips in order to carry out a survey of the dental health in Aboriginal and Torres Strait missions in north Queensland. In 1967 he was appointed Director of Dental Services in the Department of Health. He went on to enjoy a distinguished career including being awarded the Fellowship of the International College of Dentists. He published 13 papers relating to dentistry and invented a number of items for use in dental prosthetics. Alf died in March 1973.
