Marks Family collection
Collection
This collection consists of personal papers and correspondence relating primarily to the Marks Family of Brisbane. Included is significant First World War correspondence relating to the service of Edward 'Ted' Marks, Alexander 'Alec' Marks and Joseph 'Espie' Dods; the papers of Ernestine 'Nesta' Marks; and Dr Elizabeth (Patricia) Marks. It also contains photographs, diaries, ephemera, publications, and objects relating primarily to the Marks Family of Brisbane with other items relating to the Drury, Dods and Stodart families.
The Marks family figured prominently in the social, scientific and medical spheres of Brisbane society from 1879 until the death of Dr Elizabeth Nesta (Patricia) Marks in 2002. Charles Ferdinand Marks (1852-1941) emigrated to Queensland in 1879 where he had a distinguished career as a medical practitioner and politician. His step-son, Joseph Espie Dods, and sons, Edward (Ted) Oswald Marks and Alexander (Alec) Hammett Marks, were all doctors who served during the First World War. Ted Marks married Ernestine (Nesta) Drury in London in 1914. After the war he had a distinguished career as an ophthalmologist in Brisbane. His daughter, Elizabeth (Patricia) Marks (1918-2002) was an eminent entomologist, carrying out world recognised research into mosquitoes and malaria.
