Administrative / Biographical history

The Queensland Can Company was formed in 1921 with a factory in Vulture Street, West End. As the company expanded from can making into other packing products, they purchased land at Moorooka for a new factory. In the 1950s Queensland Can Company acquired Northern Manufacturers Pty in Townsville to better service North Queensland. The company changed its name to United Packages Limited in 1967 and grew further with a new factory at Rocklea and soon expanded nationally. In 1980, United Packages Limited sold its fibreboard division to APM (later to become Amcor Fibre Packaging). The remaining manufacturing operations were sold to GWA in 1982
