Memorial card and photograph of the grave of Lyle V. D. Price # 393B issued by the British Graves Commission detailing the location of his grave and next of kin.
Lyle Price (1898-1918) was hit with a shell while entering a building in Villers-Brettoneux and was killed instantly. Price was initially buried near where he was killed about 2 miles from La Motte, a special carved cross was erected by the company.
In 1920 the Commonwealth War Graves Commission advised that Lyle's remains had been exhumed and re-interred at the Australian Military Cemetery, now known as the Villers-Brettoneux Cemetery.
Here his grave site is now commemorated in perpetuity with a headstone engraved with the Australian military 'Rising sun' emblem and the following inscription "There was a duty to do and he did it" which was supplied by the Price family.

Victory Medal posthumously issued in recognition of the service of Private Lyle Price. His name and number is impressed on its edge.
One side features the winged figure of Victory. The reverse has the words ‘THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION’ surrounded by a laurel wreath. The ribbon is of a 'two rainbow' design.
Note: the medal has been erroneously attached to the silver fastenings which relate to the 'Mothers and Widows badge' also held in the collection. See item 28045-27

The interior is inscribed '393 L.V.D. Price "Nunga" Auchenflower, Brisbane, Queensland, AUS.' The wallet contains fragments of what appear to be an embroidered lace doily.

Badge (1919)
First World War Mothers’ and Widows badge, issued in 1919 to Louisa Price in memory of her son Lyle who was killed in action. The cloth badge / ribbon is machine-embroidered with woven with wattle sprays, a Rising Sun badge, and the words “For Australia”.
The badges were suspended from a white metal bar which bore laurel leaves. Stars were added to the bottom bar, each indicating the death of one man.
Note: the silver fastenings have been erroneously attached to the Victory Medal also held, see item 28045-24

Lyle's mother Louisa, brother Ordell and several friends, sent a number of postcards to him while he was serving overseas. Many of them were inscribed with messages from home, and have been returned to the Price family after Lyle's death in 1918.

Leng was wounded in action in September 1917 at the same time as Lyle Price. It is likely they met while undergoing treatment or convalescing. Leng married Bertha Kiddle in December 1918 and returned to Australia in March 1920 with his wife and child.
