Murphys Creek Rural Fire Brigade is a volunteer fire brigade which looks after Murphys Creek and also the area extending from the foot of the Toowoomba Range, to Ballard and Costellos Road in the Upper Lockyer. Their headquarters was completely inundated by floodwaters which reached 1.5 metres and they lost three of their fire trucks.

Mark explains his role in the 2011 flood as a Senior Pilot for Emergency Management Queensland including: the shock of seeing the situation on arrival; having to navigate through the weather conditions; weighing up risks; flying into Grantham; pushing the limits of training to help those in dire need; having no maps nor GPS; going by chance; the experience of flying to houses and winching people off rooves; having no communication with others flying; having to leave people behind and feeling relieved that they were rescued; and saving lives together with other rescue teams.
Mark and his other crew members, Daren Parsons and Mark Turner were awarded the National Pride of Australia Medal for saving the lives of 28 people at Grantham during the Queensland floods.
