Sir Arthur Hodgson (1818-1902): Archive comprising: Six Account Books: December 1853-October 1859, Bank of Australasia, Ipswich; June 1860-December 1862, Bank of New South Wales; October 1861-November 1867, Bank of New South Wales; November 1867-November 1869; May 1871-October 1872; October 1872-September 1873. Bill of Exchange made out to Arthur Hodgson, 20 Sept 1882 from the Mercantile Bank of Sydney in the sum of 13,498 pounds 6 shillings and 5 pence. Manuscripts of lectures given by Arthur Hodgson: (1) Australia Revisited 1874-1889. [Printed pages pasted into notebook with manuscript amendments and additions]; (2) "A Voyage Round the World in 1866", draft and a later version of the first part; (3) the Paris Exhibition of 1878 and another on The Forests and Historic Trees of Great Britain in one volume; and (4) Arthur Hodgson's Commonplace Book, dated 1849.
Sir James Dowling (1787-1844), Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and father in law of Arthur Hodgson: Australian Diary and Almanac for the year 1844. [Printed diary with brief manuscript daily entries, and further notes by his second wife, Harriet, following Dowling's death on 27th September of that year.] Partial manuscript account of a boyhood journey from Australia to England, January-March 1860, by Francis H. Hodgson, 12 pp., inscribed "from his affectionate father, Sydney January 17th 1860"; In Memoriam volume for Sir Arthur Hodgson, compiled by his son, Francis, 1904; and a later volume of Panoramic Views of the Blue Mountains, Sydney, n.d., with photographic illustrations.
Also included is a copy of catalogue of the sale of the Hodgson Archive at Lawrences Auctioneers, Crewkerne, Somerset, 6th & 20th July 2012.

Box 2: (1850-1859)
Eliza, Lady Hodgson (1821-1902) Folio album containing approx. 60 views in pencil, pastel and wash, mostly depicting English rectories and churches and topographical prints. Notably however, the folio also contains a number of sketches of Eton Vale station (some by artists other than Eliza Hodgson) including one, "Two cottages" attributed to Conrad Martens. Further works by Eliza Hodgson in the folio include a sketch of Brisbane buildings (signed and dated October 1850), a view of the first Brisbane Hospital, view of Rosalie Plains homestead (dated 1852), and two sketches of Sydney Harbour. The folio also contains two original photographs, one depicting a group of (unidentified) military, possibly vice-regal ADCs.

Box 3: (1834-1926)
Sir Arthur Hodgson: Cloth folio together with a collection of original photographs as follows: (1) Fourteen photographs mostly relating to Hodgson's interests or property in Queensland, various sizes, including a large scene of copper mining; views of Eton Vale, the Hodgson sheep station (including the entrance gate and the drawing room (1888); early view of Drayton on the Darling Downs; Princess Royal Harbour, Western Australia June 1861; "Where the Dunbar was wrecked - Sept. 1857"; Sir Arthur Hodgson's Cottages in Clopton Street and Hume Street, Toowoomba by E.J. Dann; steam sheep washing, probably at Eton Vale, and a group at Spring Bluff, below the Toowoomba Range. (2) Five original photographs of prize winning sheep and a photocopy of Eton Vale sheep from the Queenslander, 1899; (3) Five mounted studio portraits of Sir Arthur Hodgson; one photograph of his daughter-in-law, Mrs Edward Hodgson and her two children; one photograph by Russell & Sons of London of Eliza, Lady Hodgson in old age; one photograph of an unfinished portrait of her father, Mr Justice Dowling by Sydney artist J.B. Earl [East?], 1834; one reproduction of an engraving of Castel Vielh in France; (4) Group of small photographs taken on a visit to Australia in 1925-26 by members of the Hodgson family (including Francis H. Hodgson), mostly captioned on the reverse, including a view of Coochin Coochin station, street scenes in Toowoomba, Rosedale Boarding House (unidentified location) and a series of 20 views of engineering works on the Murray River, relating to the flood diversion scheme.

Box 4: (1841-1900)
Eliza, Lady Hodgson (1821-1902): five works of art in pen and ink, and/or watercolour wash. One depicting her home Eton Vale station from the hill behind (1868), two others depicting Goomburra station (both dated 1869); and a further two ink and watercolour sketches depicting the monument to John D. McLean (Colonial Treasurer of Queensland) and the main house, both on Westbrook Station. (The latter work dated 1869.) One pencil sketch by Conrad Martens entitled: "Eton Vale Arthur Hodgson Esq." (signed and dated 1853). [This work removed from, and originally included in the folio of drawings, now housed in Box 17688 O/S.] One pencil drawing inscribed on reverse, "Head Station Eton Vale Darling Downs", dated December 1st 1841, with an annotation "AH?" suggesting that it may be the work of Arthur Hodgson. One pencil and wash sketch, in another hand, bearing a later inscription on the reverse: "Unidentified - homestead with child near fence" and a second ink and wash sketch, also with a later inscription "Eton Vale SW 1844" . [Both of these works removed from, and originally included in the folio of drawings now housed in Box 17688 O/S.]
One original mounted photograph by London portrait photographers Elliott & Fry depicting Sir Arthur Hodgson in the study at Clopton House, his estate in Warwickshire. One original mounted photograph by Stratford-on-Avon photographer Douglas McNeille depicting Sir Arthur and Lady Hodgson with members of their family, on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Anniversary, 30th March 1892. One panel containing 5 original mounted photographs of "Winners of Six Champion Prizes at the R.A. Society's Show, Toowoomba 1899". All bred by A. Hodgson & Son, Eton Vale. One large-format original albumen print of Eton Vale Station, showing surrounding outbuildings and the main house which was destroyed by fire in 1912.

Box 5: (1862-1878)
Hodgson Family. Five mid 19th century daguerreotypes and six ambrotype portraits of Sir Arthur Hodgson, his wife Eliza and members of their family. (One damaged.) Several of the portraits depict the Hodgson children, however none are specifically unidentified. The collection also includes a miniature watercolour of Eliza Hodgson, and a folded note in her hand: "For dear Sir Arthur. The likeness of the girl he proposed to, and lately found among some papers. The most successful attempt of my girlhood. It could be photographed and coloured by a good artist." All of the items are cased. Two of the daguerreotypes bear the gilt stamp of Freeman Brothers, Sydney (probably circa 1855). A third daguerreotype (depicting an unidentified older woman) carries the stamp of London photographer William Edward Kilburn (1818-1891).
A collection of 19th century medallions (mostly) awarded to Sir Arthur Hodgson, comprising: Silver Napoleon III Exposition Universelle medallion, Paris 1867; Silver Imperial Institute medallion, to commemorate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria, 1887 (both with round Waterlow and Sons Ltd. cardboard box); Bronze Golden Jubilee medallion issued to commemorate celebrations in the County of Warwick, 1887 (in original case). Bronze Colonial and Indian Exhibition medallion, London 1886 (in original case); Silver Cambridge Installation medallion, 1862. With an inscription: "Princeps Illustriss Gulielmus Cavendish Devoniae Dux" and a likeness of the Duke of Devonshire (Chancellor of the University) on the reverse (in original case); Large bronze medallion, International Exhibition prize medal, London 1862 .(Britannia seated obverse with female figures. Engraved on the rim, "Mrs Hodgson Class IV" (in original case); Large bronze medallion bearing the legend: New South Wales to the Prize exhibitors 1862, designed by W. Kullrich, with Ceres obverse, and the reverse with kneeling female figure at the feet of Britannia, with wool bales and a merchant ship. Named on the rim to "A. Hodgson. Iron Ores" (in original case); a bronze French Exposition Universelle Internationale medallion, Paris 1878. By Oudine. The obverse figures include Marianne and Mercury, the reverse with angels unfurling a scroll. Printed inscription in gold inside lid of case reads, "Medaille Commemorative Offerte pour Services Rendus Arthur Hodgson Esq., C.M.G Commissionaire de Queensland" (in original case); Primrose League medal, brass and enamel on ribbon (damaged), bearing the legend: "Imperium et Libertas" (in case). Two empty cases.

"Photographic Views in Queensland", vellum gilt album containing 73 prints, 59 of them 132 x 192 mm. 13 of them 73 x 73mm and one 145 x 100 mm, 1860s. Depicting scenes of town and country, including old Government House and Parliament House, the Domain, north Brisbane, Kangaroo Point, Petrie's Bight and buildings including the Police Barracks and Milton House. Eliza, Lady Hodgson (1821-1902): One Victorian Album containing approx 75 views in pencil, ink and wash, ca 1864-1875: Rome, Lake Como, Lake Zurich, Mount Pilatus from Lucerne, Interlaken, Lake Geneva, Freybourg, Lake Maggiore, Florence, Tyrol, Innsbruck, Lake Walchensee, Engadine and Homburg; also a few views in Ceylon, Panama and Aden; and landscape views, houses and churches in Trumpington, King's Langley, Lillington, Leamington, Dunkeld, Meenglas, Forres, Warthill, Shotover, Lynton, Wickenby, Prodeaux, Sudneley Castle, Tintagel and elsewhere.
Partial (disbound) folio containing three sepia and wash drawings as follows: 'Eton Vale Looking Towards The Range Darling Downs"; "Men's Huts, Moray Fields Cabulture River [sic] Oct 31st 1868"; "From the Verandah, Montpellier House. Brisbane". Vacant spaces in the folio mark the original locations of five other sepia and wash drawings, removed and now located in Box 17690 O/S. (Removed items as follows: "Westbrook. Darling Downs.Queensland. (January 8th 1869"; "Westbrook & Mr MacLean's [sic] Monument."; "Eton Vale, from the hill behind."; "Goomburra, fm the House. Box 8: (1840-1849; 1912)
Printed map of Hodgson landholdings centered on the parish of Cambooya, Darling Downs, partly hand-coloured, with manuscript annotations. Newspaper article relating to Eton Vale station and stud farm, entitled "Shearing in 1840" (two items). Accompanied by the frames which originally housed these items. Reverse of frame for map of Cambooya parish bears the label of John A. Book[er?], Picture Frame Maker, Stratford-on-Avon, together with a hand-written key to the map's colour codings, which record date of selections, purchases at auction and exchanges with Government. Reverse of frame for newspaper article bears the remains of another article, recording the destruction of Eton Vale homestead by fire in June 1912. A third frame, also included, previously housed the sketch of the head station of Eton Vale station (1841) with annotation "AH?", now located in Box 17690 O/S.
