Administrative / Biographical history

John A. Crawford (1914-1990) was born near Belfast on 15 August 1914. He came to Australia as a 6 year old with his parents, almost dying from illness on the journey. He lived in Hendra as child and was a interested in sailing, building a sailing boat with friends. He met his wife, Isobel Marjorie Corrie, while he was still a teenager (she was his friend's sister), but they married years later, during the war (on 13 March 1943). They had four daughters and the children grew up at "Ingleneuk", 55 Paradise Street, Highgate Hill. A keen photographer and home movie maker, Crawford documented his family life as well as his war service, during which he served in the Royal Australian Engineers on Thursday Island. After the war, he worked as an engineer for H. Platt & Associates, an electrical and mechanical engineering firm specialising in air-conditioning.
