Letter (23 July 1917)
Letter from Private Alexander Butter in Egypt to his sister, Mrs Florence Hancox, in Red Hill, Brisbane, Queensland. He writes of being stationed in a tent in the desert and buying souvenirs to send home.
The envelope is included. The letter is written on textured paper from Egypt which features a view of the Nile River. The envelope is made from the same paper and features a view of the pyramids.

Letter (27 September 1917)
Letter from Private Alexander Butter in Palestine to his mother, Mrs Mary Ann Forrest in Red Hill, Brisbane, Queensland. He writes that he has been doing some cabinet making (he was a joiner by trade) and that things are very slow. The Frank Potts he mentions is the artist Frank Waldo Potts (1888-1970) who had a long exhibition history with the Royal Queensland Art Society.
The envelope is included. The letter is written on textured paper from Egypt, described by Butter as a 'combination of wood and paper'. The paper features an illustration of boats on the Nile. The envelope is made of the same material and features an illustration of native Egyptians.

Mary Ann Forrest (1851-1928) previously married to Alexander Butter, previously Jenkinson, nee Galloway. Born 1851. Mary Ann was the mother of Florence Hancox (nee Butter), and Alexander and Norman Butter who served during the First World War.

Florence Hancox (nee Butter) with her daughter Dorothy Butter Hancox of Red Hill. Florence married Joseph Henry Hancox in 1911, she was the daughter of Alexander Butter and Mary Anne, nee Galloway. The Hancox family lived at 33 Confederate Street, Red Hill, Brisbane.

Residence 33 Confederate Street, Red Hill (1914)
Florence Hancox, nee Butter, the wife of Joseph Henry Hancox is pictured standing in front of the residence with her two children, Dorothy and baby Phillip. The house was built by Henry Hancox ca. 1869-1873 and was a landmark of the area. It was known locally as Noah's Ark and was demolished in 1927. The residence built in its place is owned by the great great granddaughter of Henry Hancox.

Reverend Thomas Leitch (1920?)
Portrait of Reverend Thomas Leitch, born in 1849 in Scotland. He emigrated to Queensland with his parents in 1863 and settled at Bald Hills, Brisbane. In 1875 he became city missionary of the Jireh Baptist Church in Fortitude Valley. In 1877 he was appointed pastor of the newly formed Windsor Road Baptist Church in Red Hill, Brisbane. He held this position until his retirement in March 1929 and in November of that year he died in Port Said, Egypt, while returning to Australia from a visit to Great Britain.
