Brims family papers

Collection of original photographs and copy prints taken by Harriet Brims in North Queensland. Includes photographs of Britannia Studio and the Brims' sawmill in Ingham, St. George's Church in Mareeba and the Geraldton World newspaper office in Innisfail. The certificate is for first prize in a photographic competition held by the Mareeba District Mining, Pastoral, Agricultural and Industrial Association. Harriet Brims was one of the judges.

Includes correspondence, newspaper clippings and photographs with particular focus on the history of St. George The Martyr Anglican Church which was built in 1905 by Francis and Marcus Brims when they were teenagers. It was the first church in Mareeba. Includes an issue of The Northern Churchman (Vol. IX. No. 103, 7 August 1905) and a publication by Jacqueline Morris titled '100 Years of History of the Anglican Church of Mareeba'.

Photograph of Donald Gray Brims at his blacksmith works at Blackall. In May 1882, Donald Brims established his own business as a blacksmith, wheelwright and brass moulder, where he performed maintenance on Cobb & Co. coaches and horses and built Condamine cow bells. Includes three copy prints of the same original photograph.

Papers and photographs relating to the radio telegraphic instruments engineered and made by Marcus Brims in Mareeba. Includes correspondence with the Postmaster-General's Department regarding licence applications (1913-1922) and correspondence with the Wireless Institute of Australia. Queensland Division (1980-1982) and information about the history of amateur radio in Queensland. Also included is a certificate from the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club awarded to the Brims family in 2014 in recognition of their support in celebrating 100 years of licenced amateur radio in Queensland.

Photographs and architectural plans relating to the Brims residence in Railway Terrace, Milton, built when the family shifted to Brisbane from Mareeba in 1912.

Papers relating to D.G. Brims & Sons Pty. Ltd. which was first established as a joinery factory located at the corner of Railway Terrace and Cribb Street, Milton. D.G. Brims & Sons moved into plywood making in 1917 and by 1918 they had established a rotary veneer plant that was producing 3-ply plywood from hoop pine. They were the first plywood manufacturers in Australia to continue production over an extended period (more than 90 years). Includes correspondence, clippings, agreements, certificates and purchase orders.

Photographs and clippings relating to shipments of logs from Borneo by D.G. Brims & Sons. In 1934, the Queensland Government established the Queensland Plywood and Veneer Pool to control the volume of logs supplied to each plywood manufacturer at equal amounts regardless of their capacity. D.G. Brims & Sons declined to take part in the pool and as a result lost access to government-controlled native hoop pine supplies. This led to D.G. Brims & Sons importing a large volume of Pacific maple logs from Borneo.

Photographs and papers relating to 4 One Box Company of Australia, a business established by D.G. Brims & Sons in 1931 in Yeerongpilly. The company manufactured wire-bound boxes using plywood and thick veneer and were made to size. They were used for the butter export industry to the United Kingdom in the 1930s and 1940s. Includes photographs, clipping and an agreement.

This visit was to help Marcus and John identify the equipment needs and technical developments that D.G. Brims & Sons would require for future development in the wood panel industries.
