Scope and content

Collection of photograph albums, photographic slides, loose photographs and papers relating to the lives of Vivian"Doug/Duncan" Hemsley Hawck and his wife Jean Isobel Smith. The albums include photographs of Brisbane, in particular Milton, Grantham in the Lockyer Valley district, and South East Queensland. The slides show North Queensland, Brisbane (including 1974 floods), and Warana parades.

Administrative / Biographical history

Vivian 'Doug/Duncan' Hemsley Hawck was born in 1912 in Brisbane and was partly educated at Marist Brothers. When he was a young boy, his mother and aunt inherited the Grantham Hotel and the family moved to Grantham to manage the business. Vivian Hawck's father worked for the railways and spent most of his time away. The family eventually moved back to Brisbane, living at 13 Huessler Terrace, Milton. Mr Hawck worked as a bus and taxi driver, before taking on a role at Drug House Australia. He married Jean Isobel Smith in ca. 1950
