John Stanton Davis Mellick, was born in Ireland in 1920 to John and Violet Mellick. His father had served in England during the First World War with the Australian Flying Corps. The family moved to Rockhampton, and soon after Brisbane, where his father gained employment with the postal service. After attending Brisbane Grammar School in the 1930s, he studied accountancy before beginning his association with the Australian Armed Forces. Commissioned Lieutenant in October 1939 he attended Duntroon Military College and served with distinction in New Guinea from 1940-1945 with HQ 5th Division and Royal Australian Signals Regiment, retiring as a Major.
