Administrative / Biographical history

Edgar Thomas Tolmie was born on the 14th of July 1910 in Brisbane and grew up in Auchenflower. He was a student at the Normal School in the city and and later attended Brisbane Grammar School. Tolmie graduated from the Pharmacy College and, after registration, moved to Roma in 1931. There he worked for the Maranoa Friendly Society. It was during this period that he met and married Lillian Frances Scotton. From Roma the couple moved to Windsor in Brisbane. After a short period, however, they moved to Gin Gin and then back to Roma. On 1942 they moved to Kilcoy, where Edgar managed a pharmacy. Between 1945 and 1952 they lived in Barcaldine. Finally, in 1952, they moved to Southport. Edgar died on the 20th of January 1976. From a very early age Edgar had a keen interest in photography, both still and motion picture. He lived through great changes in photography--from plate cameras, to roll film, from black and white to colour and, in motion picture, from silent to sound. He lived in a number of towns in country Queensland, as well as Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Tolmie recorded family and everyday life in these towns and cities, and rural activities on sheep and cattle stations. He was a member of the Queensland Amateur Cine Society (QACS).
