Series 1: Letters (1815-1962?)
This series contains 87 letters predominantly those from the itinerant miner William Bartie to his wife Mary Bartie in Victoria, Australia. The letters document William Bartie's devotion to his wife as he sought to regain their fortune mining gold and/or tin in a variety of places in Australia from 1871 until his accident in 1878. Following this the couple returned to Scotland and Mary Bartie's letters to her sister Margaret Chicken in Australia document their life until 1901 when the letters cease.
William Bartie's sister, Margaret Chicken (nee Bartie) lived in Victoria, later New South Wales, Australia, with her husband William Chicken and together they had a number of children. William Bartie also had a brother, James Bartie, who resided in Edinburgh, Scotland. A biography of William Bartley and information about the Chicken and Bartie families of Australia is available at the beginning of this series. There is also a sketch of a partial Chicken family tree located within the last item.
This series also contains a number of other items including a photocopy of the newspaper clipping documenting William Bartie's accident.
