Peter Beattie Australian Rugby League papers
Collection
Monthly minutes, accompanying Board papers and correspondence of the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) and the National Rugby League (NRL) over the last two years of Peter Beattie's chairmanship. The papers cover the period of the 'no fault rule'; significant expansion of the women's game, relationships with the Indigenous community (e.g. singing or not of the National Anthem); expansion of the State of Origin; future footprint of the game; as Deputy Chair of the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF), expansion of international rugby league in the Pacific nations of PNG, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and New Zealand.
The Hon. Peter Beattie AC, Queensland's 36th Premier, was in office from 1998 to 2007. Under his leadership the Labor Party won four state elections including sweeping victories in 2001, 2004 and 2006, confirming him as one of the most electorally successful politicians in Australia. Beattie joined the Australian Rugby League Commission in July 2017 and was Chairman from February 2018 to 30 October 2019 when he relinquished the role. During his 20 months as Chair, he played a pivotal role in achieving positive and collaborative stakeholder engagement at all levels of the game and across relevant industries. He also led one of the largest integrity reforms of the game, overseeing the 'no fault, stand down' rule, ultimately balancing the protection and wellbeing of players and the game overall.
