Scope and content

This Clem Jones oral history project is a series of 26 detailed interviews with colleagues, employees, friends and other people who were significant in the life of Clem Jones, Brisbane's longest serving Lord Mayor. The interviews provide unique view into the life of Clem and his wife, Lady Mayoress Sylvia Jones. The Jones' each made significant contributions to Brisbane's development during and after Clem's tenure as Lord Mayor, especially in the areas of sewerage, water and transport infrastructure, and sporting and community facilities. Sylvia was involved with many charities and was a keen and active patron of arts and culture in Brisbane. This oral history project began in 2018 and was conceived and created by Mr Lindsay Marshall, Communications Director of the Clem Jones Group.

Administrative / Biographical history

Clem Jones AO (16 January 1918 - 15 December 2007), a surveyor by profession, was the longest serving Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Queensland, representing the Labor Party from 1961 to 1975. He was Chair of the Darwin Reconstruction Commission from 1975 to 1978. Jones was also a successful businessman and philanthropist.
