Richard Stringer Architectural Photography Archive

Richard Edwin Stringer AM is an Australian architectural photographer whose career spans more than five decades. Widely recognised for his significant contribution to the documentation of Queensland’s built heritage, Stringer first developed an interest in photography during his architectural studies in Victoria. He relocated to Brisbane in 1963 to work with architect James Birrell, and in 1967 established his own photographic practice specialising in architectural photography. Stringer’s work constitutes a comprehensive visual record of Queensland’s architectural, industrial, and cultural environments. Over the course of his career, he also photographed the majority of exhibitions at Brisbane’s Institute of Modern Art, where he was later appointed an honorary life member. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 2002 and received an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland in 2003, recognising his contribution to documenting Queensland’s architectural heritage.
