Diary (1918-1919)
This item consists of a diary written by Claude Fraser documenting his service during the First World War.
Initially assigned to the 6th General Service Reinforcements Queensland, Claude Fraser age 18, left Sydney in September and was appointed sergeant for the 'voyage only'. On arrival in England he was assigned to the 9th Infantry Battalion just days before armistice was declared. Claude who had never seen frontline service, volunteered for the Graves Registration Detachment, the Australian section of the Imperial War Graves unit, working in France, searching battlefields for the fallen.
The unit consisted of 1,100 men tasked with locating, identifying and reburying Australian war dead on the Western Front. Over 46,048 Australian servicemen lost their lives fighting on the Western Front and less than half had their locations had been recorded.
The total number of soldiers exhumed and re-buried by the Australian Graves Unit in 1919 was 5469.

British War Medal (1919?)
This item contains Claude Fraser's British War Medal attached to a ribbon.
- the medal has a figure of St. George trampling the shield of the Central Powers and a skull and cross bones, the emblems of death. Above this is a rising sun, marking victory. The back contains an effigy of King George V. Along the edges is inscribed '53198, A-SGT. C.A. Fraser 9-BN. A.I.F'.
- the ribbon has a wide central orange stripe with narrow bands of white, black and blue on each side, towards each edge.
The medal was instituted by King George V in 1919 to mark the end of World War 1 and to record service given.

Ribbon bar (1915-1919?)
This item contains a ribbon bar that incorporates 3 designs:
- left edge design associated with the Victory Medal. The design has central bands of red, then yellow, green, blue and violet outwards towards the left hand side and yellow and green outwards towards the right hand side.
- central design associated with the British War Medal (see Item 17).
- right edge design associated with the 1914-1915 Star. The design contains bands of blue, white and red, from left to right.
The Victory Medal was authorised in 1919 to commemorate the victory of the Allied Forces over the Central Powers. Each of the Allied nations issued a ‘Victory Medal’ to their own nationals. Each nation used the standard ribbon but used different designs on the medal to reflect national identity and custom.
The 1914–15 Star was authorised in 1918 and was awarded for service in specified theatres of war between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915.

This item contains mainly photographs of soldiers training in the Brisbane area, 1939-1942? Some or all of the soldiers were members of the Queensland Cameron Highlanders, the 61st Battalion.
The Queensland Cameron Highlanders were a militia unit of Scottish descent with Scottish-style uniforms including kilts and Glengarry caps with their own band. Their Scottish garb was replaced by regular service gear when they were called up and joined the rest of the 7th Brigade in 1940.
- all photographs bar one were taken by the Ranald Simmonds Studio, corner of Queen and Albert Streets, Brisbane. The remaining photograph was taken by 'The Telegraph' Feature Services Brisbane.
- photographs include those of:
- group portraits Queensland Cameron Highlanders in formal dress.
- the Queensland Cameron Highlanders' bagpipe band.
- photographs of soldiers in formation, some in standard dress, some wearing Glengarry caps.
- photographs of soldiers operating a machine gun.

Also included in this item is a photograph in a mat frame of soldiers in the jungle. One of the soldiers is mounted on a horse and the soldier pointing the staff is an officer. The photographer and date is unknown, though the date is likely to be between early December 1941-1945.

Series 6: Brisbane Cash and Carry (and Signal Cash Store) financial records (1921-1960?)
This series contains financial records for:
- Claude Fraser's first grocery store, the Signal Cash Store, located in Ann Street, The Valley, Brisbane.
- Brisbane Cash and Carry Stores in Brisbane and Queensland.
Claude Fraser applied his knowledge learnt from running the Signal Cash Store and his overseas enquiries to open his first Brisbane Cash and Carry in 1923 and from there expand throughout Brisbane and Queensland.
The records were collected by Claude Fraser. Some may have been created by him, others may have been created under his direction.
Photocopied sheets listing the Brisbane Cash and Carry store code numbers and store names used in some of the records an be found in Series 7, Item 47.

In 1925 the Ann Street store in The Valley could no longer cope with the increase in trade so a larger premises was secured on Brunswick Street, in the Valley. In 1926 Claude brought Mr Park (manager of Brabant and Co.) in as a partner. (Information taken from: The Brisbane Courier, 23 January 1929).
By 1939 there were 12 Brisbane Cash adn Carry stores. Further expansion was delayed due to World War 2. There were 15 Brisbane Cash and Carry stores when the business became a public company in 1950. (Information taken from: Claude Fraser life/army by Patricia Fraser McNab, Item 1 of this collection).
Brisbane Cash and Carry expanded following World War 2 to a total of 32 stores. In 1958 the business was sold to Woolworths.
