The collection contains a wide variety of material such as certificates, clippings, correspondence, documents, exhibition catalogues and ephemera and photographs including photographic artworks by Ruby Spowart.
Ruby Spowart was born in Numurkah, Victoria, in 1928 and has been a resident of Queensland since 1968. Ruby was given her first camera at the age of 8 and has pursued photography ever since. Now in her 90s, Ruby uses her iPhone for photography. She was an active member of photographic groups and clubs, serving as director of the Australian Photographic Society from 1983-1988. Ruby was awarded the APR Medal for 'Service to Photography' in 1981. During her long career, Ruby has had solo, joint and group exhibitions, her works are held in private collections, as well as in institutional collections in Australia and overseas, including the National Gallery of Australia. In 1980, she co-founded Imagery Gallery in Brisbane with her son Doug Spowart which operated until 1995. During this time Ruby curated exhibitions in the gallery as well as photographic exhibitions for other organisations and institutions.
