Queensland Music Teachers' Association records

Minutes of the first meeting of the Association, held on 11 December 1920 are loose in this minute book, including a list of attendees. The Rules of the association are glued into the front cover, and there is some loose correspondence.

Hardcover register with handwritten names of the registered music teachers who were certified members of the Association.

The book lists the registered teachers in alphabetical and chronological order. The register also contains the addresses, qualifications and date of election for each certified teacher.

The cards record the names of certified teachers, their membership numbers and subscription details, contact information, qualifications and the branch they belonged to.

The folder includes photographs, news clippings, biographies, tour coordination papers, programs and correspondence.

Ledger book with handwritten entries relating to the financial details of seminars coordinated by the Association. 

A folder of papers related to workshops organised by the Association, including correspondence with presenters and attendees, coordination of events, finances and attendance lists.

Leather-bound guest book containing the signatures of people attending the 75th anniversary of the Association afternoon tea in 1996, the nnual general meeting in 1997, events in 1999-2000 and a Christmas in July event in 2003.

There is also a scrapbook of apology cards sent by people unable to attend the 75th anniversary event in 1996.

Folder of material relating to the Association's centenary in 2021.

The folder includes:

• a copy of 'dal Segno, memoir of ten past presidents' (1975)
• a program of the centenary event on 9 April 2021 and a running sheet
• list of attendees
• correspondence and meeting notes from the organisers
• media releases
• sheet music of a song commissioned for the event - 'The language of my heart', written by Jason Barry-Smith, and
• proposal for a centenary publication by Peter Roennfeldt.

2 folders of papers, mostly correspondence, related to the registration of music teachers in Queensland.

There is a copy of the proposed rules for the registration of teachers, legal advice given in response to the draft, a transcript of public meeting held in 1923 and correspondence from members providing feedback on the proposal to register music teachers in Queensland. There are letters from politicians about the likelihood of proposed legislation being presented to Parliament, and newspaper clippings.

There are also minutes from various sub-committees considering the issue of music teacher registration, and correspondence with associated interest groups.

Much of the this material is addressed to Percy Brier as secretary of the Music Teachers Association.

Folder of correspondence, mostly around 1921-1923 relating to the early formation of the Association. 

There are also papers dated from 1950-1981, including:

• a typed obituary for Victoria Blakey who served as Secretary of the Association for over 30 years,
• some completed  "Problems of the profession" surveys from members,
• a typed document "Extract from One Hundred Years and More of Music in Queensland" by Percy Brier,
• a typed address that was delivered at the 60th anniversary luncheon of the MTAQ in 1981 by Basil Jones, and
• newspaper clippings.

2 folders of general correspondence.

Folder of papers and correspondence related to the National Council of Musical Associations of Australia.

It is likely the file was compiled by Percy Brier, as most of the correspondence is addressed to him personally.

There are telegrams, letters, handwritten notes, meeting agendas, conference papers, financial records and reports.

Folder of correspondence, mostly related to articles published in the Bravura newsletter and other Association publications, including draft articles, media releases and letters to the editor.

Folder of papers and correspondence, mostly related to the finances of the Association including a building fund trust, taxation and constitutional matters, and financial statements.

Folder of papers and correspondence, mostly related to the representation of the Association on the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB). There is correspondence, meeting minutes, reports and newsletters.

Australian Music Examinations Board certificate awarded to Ian William McKinley in 1948. He was president of the Association in the 1990s.

4 minute books containing handwritten and typed meeting minutes.

The first book includes a list of members from 1978 written on the final page, and a loose handwritten copy of the President's Report for 1979-1980. 

7 folders of papers relating to the activities of the Sunshine Coast branch of the Association.

The folders include memberships and membership lists, newsletters, promotional material, meeting minutes and financial records.

There is also a notebook titled 'MTAQ important info' with handwritten notes, and membership information and lists. Loose papers contained within the notebook include correspondence, newsletter clippings, course outline for a Diploma in Music Teaching (University of the Sunshine Coast), and an article entitled "Countdown to Performance: How to realise potential and perform with confidence" by Ruth Bonetti.

The last folders in this item has papers relating to changes to the constitution, and to the Branch becoming an informal group. There is also material related to the Buderim Big Bash, the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfods and the funeral service for Desmond Taylor.
