Daphne Kingston (nee Watt) was born on 11 November 1928 in Earlwood, Sydney to parents George Seymour Watt and Frances Mary (nee Griffin). George was a widower with two children, Ray Georgina and George Covington when he married Frances. Daphne's maternal grandparents were Charles and Jane Griffin and her paternal grandparents were Charles Llewellyn Watt and Elizabeth Georgiana Covington Troy.
