Administrative / Biographical history

BWHA was established in 1933, with the first playing fields at Marchant Park, Chermside. The Association’s home base moved to Downey Park in 1959 as Downey Park was designated a ‘Women’s Reserve’ which enabled the joint development of facilities for many women’s sport through the Queensland Women’s Sports Council (QWASC). In 1985 a large clubhouse was built at Downey Park, housing a canteen, function room and administration offices. Downey Park is a shared facility with softball using the fields from October to March each year and hockey from April to September. BWHA also holds the lease for Rasey Park, Butterfield Street, Herston and utilises the artificial turf facilities of the State Hockey Centre, Redcliffe, Burringbar Park and Easts Tiger Turf. In 2022, BWHA provides fixtures for 17 senior affiliated clubs and 17 junior clubs and provides support and training for umpires and coaches. Player numbers exceed 3000 across turf and grass divisions.
