In February, 1923, lone prospector John Campbell Miles, discovered a lead-silver-zinc ore near the Leichhardt River in North-Western Queensland. He named his prospecting licenses "Mt Isa', a name that originated from "Mt Ida", a West Australian gold-field. Historically, Mount Isa Mines was possibly the most productive single mine. It produced lead, silver, zinc, copper, and coal, with the copper and lead being smelted on site, and copper anodes and zinc being transported to Townsville. Lead ingots were transported to a refinery in Britian where the silver was extracted.
