Biographical history
Jens Hansen Lundager was a Danish-born Australian photographer, newspaper editor and politician. He was considered a master of photography in his era. Born in Vejlby, Denmark, in 1853, Lundager worked as a potter before contracting tuberculosis. This forced him to find less physically demanding work which led him to establish a photography business under his own name. However, his illness still troubled him leading him to emigrate to Sydney, Australia in 1879, aged 25. Lundager worked as a photographer for the New South Wales government before trying his hand at gold mining at Temora. He then moved to Rockhampton, Queensland, where he took over the studio of photographer Louis Buderus in East Street and established a photography business. The Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company commissioned Lundager to take photographs of Mount Morgan mines, company owners and their families (some in domestic settings) as well as company guests and workers. Lundager married in 1882 and by about 1884 he was making frequent trips to Mount Morgan. In 1885, the Queensland Government commissioned him to create a photographic album for the Indian and Colonial Exhibition. In 1892, Lundager's studio burnt down and he moved to Mount Morgan. Lundager continued his photography business and bought a bookstore to supplement his earnings. Although most of Lundager's work as a photographer in Mount Morgan stemmed from the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company, he also took photographs of the town, as well as local scenery, activities and events. Lundager owned and edited the local newspaper the 'Mount Morgan Argus' for many years. He was also heavily committed to the Mount Morgan community serving on the Mount Morgan Town Council (twice as mayor) and was involved with the Mount Morgan Masonic Lodge, the Mount Morgan School of Arts, the Mount Morgan Technical College, the Mount Morgan Progress Association, the Mount Morgan Hospital Committee, the Mount Morgan Boys' School Committee, the Mount Morgan Girls' School Committee, the Penny Savings Bank, the Gordon Club, the Mount Morgan Licensing Bench, the Workers' Political Organisation and the Australian Workers' Association. In 1913, the tuberculosis Lundager struggled with in his earlier years returned forcing him to wind back his business and community interests and move to Sydney in 1919. Jens Lundager died in Sydney in 1930, aged 76. (Information taken from: Danes in Australia, Art and Photography and Wikipedia websites, viewed 4 September 2024).
