John Hamilton Craies was born in Townsville in 1894. He served in the Military Cadet Corps and the [Australian] Garrison Artillery in Townsville. John enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) age 20 in Alderley, Brisbane in 1914. He embarked Brisbane on the H.M.A.S. transport ‘Aeneas’ travelling via Sydney to the war. He was part of the 25th Battalion and served at locations such as the Gallipoli Peninsula, Alexandria, Somalia and Zeitoun, at times within the 22nd Howitzer Brigade, and the 105th Battery of the 25th Battalion. He was then transferred to France and the 5th Field Artillery Brigade (F.A.B). He took leave to the United Kingdom in October/November 1917 and October/November 1918. He returned to Australia on the H.T. ‘Rio Negro’ in 1919. John worked as a bank officer in many locations and was part of the Citizen Military Forces (C.M.F.) during World War 2. He resided in Ipswich from 1954 until his death in 1979.
Mary and John Craies had a daughter Helene Alma Craies (1928-2018). Helene married Gordon Douglas Hughes (1928-). The West family were related to Gordon through his mother.

- postcard of two women and a man standing by parcels destined for soldiers serving overseas, with the caption 'Lest we forget...the first lot of 1918 Xmas parcels at 'Nyrambla', Ascot ready for the post. With thanks for your help. Best Christmas wishes from Joseph Botten.'
- many individual soldier portraits as well as group portraits. Some have captions containing details such as dates, locations, names. Portraits include those of members of the 5th Field Artillery Brigade (F.A.B.) John Craise, Arthur Verner Barwood (SERN 8763) and Leslie Clarence Hobson (SER8899). Some soldiers were unidentifiable, others identified themselves as 'Jack the Ripper' or 'The Storeman'. Some of the portraits were taken in France.

This item contains the monograph Treasure trove : being good things lost and found, collected by John O'London, published by George Newnes Ltd., London, in 1925.
The inside of the front cover contains miscellaneous material such as: rhymes by G. Birkett, Joyce Kilner; quotes by Abraham Lincoln and Disraeli; and artworks, one a print of a lead pencil drawing of the Queensland War Memorial by Douglas Pratt, the other two crows gossiping on a sign post.

- original political cartoon of Winston Churchill by Jim Dodson. The cartoon was drawn on white card using black pen. It contains a fabric loop on its back allowing it to be hung and is 16 x 14 cm.. Winston Churchill was a British politician serving as prime minister twice during his career, the first during World War 2.

This item contains miscellaneous postcards, photographs and negatives:
- various people, largely unidentified, identified people include Margaret Stewart (-1908), Arthur Stewart.
- buildings and scenery, largely unidentified, identified places include the North Australian Hotel, The Australian Bank of Commerce, Lake Barrine and the Victoria Bridge undergoing reconstruction in 1950.
- portraits of soldiers and a woman volunteer as well as photographs of military activities such as a church parade, army camps such as Frasers Camp, Enoggera and the army hospital at Enoggera.
- photographs of Mount Morgan buildings and mining including the building housing the Mount Morgan Fire Brigade, which opened in 1949, built on the remains of Jen Lundager's bookshop.
- photograph of a kookaburra which has been manually edited.
