Susanna de Vries (-Evans) was born in London to Irish parents. Her father was an author and BBC broadcaaster; her mother worked as a teacher. Due to family circumstances, she was later adopted and brought up in Chislehurst, Kent. Educated at St George's School, Ascot, she won scholarships to attend the Sorbonne in Paris and the Universidad Menendez Pelayo at Santander. She completed her postgraduate study in art history at universities in Madrid and Florence. In 1975 Susanne de Vries came to Australia with her then-husband, the late Professor Evans, and ran the Rare Book Department of Lawsons Auctioneers in Sydney. After leaving Lawsons, she began writing on 19th century Australian women and Australian art. In 1986 she married Brisbane City Archtitect Jake De Vries.
