Administrative / Biographical history

The Scribblers writing group was founded in the year 1911 by Mrs Mary Elkington, who had recently arrived in Brisbane from Hobart, where there was a writer's group called The Itinerants' Club, of which she had been a member. The Scribblers was similar to The Itinerants' Club except that subjects to be written about were not necessarily to be on travel but on any subject whatever, abstract or material, but exempting religion and politics. A series of rules were drawn up. There were to be 25 members. Papers were to be of half hour duration, or a series of five minute papers, followed by comments by the other members. Afternoon tea was to be in members' homes, the price of which was not to exceed 5/- (sandwiches and one cake).
