The collection consists of six sketches including works entitled: (1) "Government Bounty - distribution of blankets to Brisbane Aborigines on the Queen's Birthday"; (2) "Celestials" on the way to the Ravenswood Diggings-Northern Queensland" (1870); (3) "Sunday Visitors At Our Camp False Bay-Cairns 27/11/92".
Donald Sydney Thistlethwayte came to Brisbane in 1862 where he was engaged in survey work, partly on the Toowoomba line, and he remained connected with the Queensland railway survey for the next 50 years. He became engineer-in-charge of the Drayton deviation, Melbourne Street railway, the Roma Street to Mayne Junction section and Central Station. He married Mary de Lacey Moffatt, a niece of Sir Joshua Peter Bell and became a prominent and influential member of the Queensland art scene, serving as Honorary Treasurer (1892), Vice-President (1894-1897; 1904-1907) and President of the Queensland Art Society (1912-1914).
