Scope and content

The papers consist of two diaries kept by Mallyon on active service during the First World War. With the diaries is a letter to Mary Ellen Mallyon following the death of Mallyon. There are also photographs and postcards collected by Mallyon during his service. There are 6 items labelled M767/1-6.

Administrative / Biographical history

Hebert Thomas Moffitt Mallyon was born on 1 May 1894 to Thomas Ernest and Mary Ellen Mallyon of Springsure. Mallyon enlisted on 26 August 1915 in Springsure. He served in the First World War with C Section, 15th Field Ambulance, 5th Australian Division, Australian Army Medical Corps. He served mainly in France, including the Somme, and Belgium. Mallyon died of wounds on 29 September 1917. He is buried in Belgium, 72 Menin Road South Military Cemetery Ypres.
