This collection consists of personal papers, correspondence, ephemera and artwork relating to John Howard Simmonds as well as photographs of the Simmonds Family.
John Howard Simmonds (1901-1992), plant pathologist, was born in the Brisbane suburb of Taringa. His parents were Victorian-born John Howard Simmonds, a third generation stonemason, and English-born Rose Simmonds, nee Culpin, photographer. Simmonds Jr. was educated at Clayfield Boys' College, Clayfield (Brisbane Boys' College) and graduated from the University of Queensland (BSc, 1923; MSc, 1926) with first class honours. He was subsequently appointed to the staff of the entomology branch of the State Department of Agriculture and Stock. Simmonds became the first full-time plant pathologist in the department. He served in New Guinea during World War Two and on his return was placed in charge of the science branch of the department. Simmonds retired in 1966, having made world class contributions to research in the field of plant disease. The University of Queensland conferred an honorary doctorate of science on him in 1969. Simmonds was also an ardent member of the Queensland Naturalists' Club and a keen boating enthusiast.
