Scope and content

This collection relates to three sons of Arthur Brett and Matilda Ross, a pioneering family who managed Beaufort Station for Arthur's uncle Sir Arthur Hunter Palmer, before walking away from the property after the 1902 (Federation) drought. Included is an extensive collection of diaries, photographs and correspondence kept by Cyril Brett describing his experiences and that of his brothers while serving during the First World War.

Administrative / Biographical history

Arthur 'Leslie' Brett (1890-1923) a sawmill labourer, enlisted in August 1914, assigned to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, he served at Gallipoli and the Middle East, before returning to Australia in 1917, suffering ill-health. In 1918 he married Elsie Row and joined his brother Cyril at the garage in Warwick, but never fully recovered from his experience in the 1914-1918 war and died in 1923, the same year as his father.
