Series 1: Barron papers (1854-1869)
This series contains papers principally relating to Thomas Henry Bowman Barron (1834-1882) who served in Bengal, with H.M. Indian Navy, and for many years was a member of the Civil Service of Queensland. Barron married Ellen Frances Blakeney in 1871, their daughter Lorna married Arthur Cecil Hunter Palmer. Among the positions Barron held were:

The papers relate to his naval career, statements and certificates of service; appointment as Inspector of Police in Queensland, after retiring as Crown Lands commissioner at Warrego 1865; his death 1882 in England and his estate. Other papers include: Governor's certificate for Sir Thomas Mcllwraith in the Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital 1888; correspondence relating to William McClintock and Mr Manning.

Series 2: Dangar papers (1840-1937)
In 1839 Arthur Hunter Palmer worked on a property in the Illawarra district, and in 1840 became manager of the New England pastoral holdings of Henry Dangar. Palmer was entrusted with the care of all their properties and affairs while Dangar and his wife visited England in 1852. On his return in 1856 an agreement was drawn up making Palmer general manager of all the Dangar holdings. Despite his worth to the family they refused him permission to marry Margaret Dangar in 1857. He continued to manage the Dangar affairs until 1863 and began his own pastoral endeavours in Queensland.

Series 3: McIlwraith diaries (1860-1893)
Diaries and notebooks kept by Thomas McIlwraith dating from his time in Victoria, and after he transferred his interests to Queensland.
Sir Thomas McIlwraith was Colonial Secretary of Queensland 1879-1883 and again in 1888. In 1893 he became Premier of Queensland. He resigned in October and served as chief secretary and secretary for railways until 29 March 1895.

Series 4: McIlwraith letters (1876-1900)
This series contains an extensive collection of correspondence received and sent by Thomas McIlwraith.
The majority of the correspondence is related to politics but some personal and financial matters are mentioned. A large part of the collection consists of correspondence between McIlwraith and Sir Arthur Palmer on a wide variety of subjects.
Other correspondents of note include: William Collins, Charles Darling, John and William Forrest, Francis Jardine, Sir Charles Lilley, James McIlwraith, James Murdoch, Sir Anthony Musgrave, Oscar de Satge, and Sir Henry Parkes.

Notes: Thomas McIlwraith was elected to the Legislative Assembly in the seat of Maranoa in 1868 and had joined the ministry of Arthur Macalister in January 1874 becoming Secretary for Public Works and Mines. He resigned from these posts in October of that year. The government of John Douglas was defeated in 1879 after a series of severe droughts and McIlwraith became premier for the first time.

Notes: McIlwraith's Queensland Investment and Land Mortgage Co. was already in difficulties. Since 1888 the London directors had complained that the local board made advances not only on flimsy security but on illegal titles secured by dummying. In 1892 they charged Thomas McIlwraith, Arthur Palmer and two others with fraud. After fifty-five days in the Supreme Court the chief justice, Sir Charles Lilley, discharged the jury and gave judgment for the plaintiffs. An appeal reversed the judgment and Thomas McIlwraith was alleged to have applied pressures which forced CharlesLilley to resign.

Series 7: Mosman papers (1885-1911)
Papers relating to Hugh Mosman (1843-1909), mine owner and Queensland politician. Mosman came to Queensland in 1860 and turned to prospecting along with Geoge Clarke and James Fraser, Mossman worked the country west of Ravenswood, finding traces of gold in 1872 near Charters Tors (Towers). Mosman was connected to Sir Arthur Palmer and Sir Thomas Mitchell, each having married one of his sisters. In June 1891 he was elected to the Queensland Legislative Council where he remained a member until he resigned in 1905. Unmarried when he died, he left his substantial estate to family.

Series 9: Palmer letters (1873-1910)
Extensive collection of correspondence received and sent by Sir Arthur Hunter Palmer (1819-1898) and his son Arthur 'Cecil' Hunter Palmer (1868-1956). A large part of the collection consists of correspondence between Palmer and Thomas McIlwraith; other correspondents of note include: Charles Lilley, John Petrie, William Forrest, Francis Jardine, Harry Wyndham Palmer of Beaufort Station, Samuel Walker Griffith, Charles Ridley-Smith, Archibald Archer, John Bramston, Claude Augustus MacDonald, and others.
Sir Arthur Palmer was born in Ireland to Arthur Palmer and Emily Hunter. He arrived in Australia in 1839 and came to Queensland in the 1860s leasing a run he called Beaufort Station. Palmer married Cecilia Mossman in 1865, and in 1866 he was elected the member for Port Curtis to the Queensland Legislative Assembly. In 1867 he was appointed Colonial Secretary, and 1870 held the offices of Colonial Secretary and Premier until 1874. He later served under Thomas McIlwraith's government who in 1879 married Palmer's sister-in-law Harriet. Palmer was later a member of the Legislative Council, acting as administrator of the colony from May to November 1883, and October 1889 to May 1898; and from 15 November 1895 to 9 April 1896 was the first Lieutenant-Governor of the Colony.
