Administrative / Biographical history

Herbert John Louis Hinkler, aviator, was born in Bundaberg, Queensland on 8 December 1892. In his boyhood, he developed an interest in flight and was successfully experimenting with home-made gliders as early as 1911. At this time he also began a mechanics course by correspondence. In 1914 Hinkler joined the Royal Navy Air Service, winning the DSM in France. After demobilization he joined A V Roe and Co Ltd and in 1920 he was awarded the Britannia Trophy for a non-stop flight from Croydon to Twin (650 miles).
