Scope and content

This collection of material - correspondence, manuscripts, transcriptions, notebooks - was gathered by Sydney Lionel May in his research into the history of towns, districts, railway stations and properties throughout Queensland, particularly in relation to the origin of their names, by personal inquiry and in his capacity as a member of the Queensland Place Names Committee. Also included are lists of Aboriginal words and meanings.

Administrative / Biographical history

Sydney Lionel May was a music teacher, concert artist, examiner and lecturer. He lived in Ipswich and was a noted church organist. He was a full time examiner and a lecturer at the University of Queensland untill his retirement in 1952. He founded the Council of Music and Drama in 1964.
