Harold Octavius Lethbridge (1880-1944)
Harold Lethbridge spent his youth on Forest Vale Station where he observed much of Aboriginal life, learning the habits and customs of the Gunggari people, and in later-life worked closely with the Wiradjuri of New South Wales. Educated at Brisbane Grammar School and later St Paul's College in Sydney, he graduated from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Medicine in 1904 and commenced a long career as a medical practitioner in Narrandera in the Riverina.
Dr Harold Lethbridge volunteered to serve overseas with the Australian Army Medical Corps during the First World War, and served in Egypt, France and England, his wife Gwen followed him wherever possible. Upon his return he resumed his medical practice and was elected to the local council where he served for four years. Dr Lethbridge became a collector and translator of Aboriginal songs, and was given the name 'the great white father' by descendants of the Wiradjuri people in recognition of his service to their community.
Narrandera Sturt Parkside Cottage Museum was established in 1968 with items from Dr Lethbridge's personal collections, including Aboriginal artefacts, predominantly Wiradjuri.
