This collection contains records and personal papers pertaining to the business of running a trust. This includes personal papers such as; birth and death certificates and wills and administrative records such as; invoices and receipts, accountings of assets, mortgage and land documentation and records of shares. Many companies are featured in this collection in the form of receipts of invoices provided to the Union Trustee. Most records pertain to the managing of an individuals' affairs rather than any business administration for the Union Trustee or other companies. Some company names included are: McWhirter's Limited - Cash drapers; West End Brewery; Dalgety and Company Limited; Central Queensland Wool-top Manufacturing Company Limited; Perkins and Co Limited; Layhey Bros & Nicklin - Saw Millers, Joiners, Machine Coopers, Case Makers.
The Union Trustee Company of Australia was established in 1889 in Victoria after an amalgamation of a number of other trustee companies. The Queensland branch was established in 1892. The company (then trading as The Trust Company Limited) was delisted in 2013. A trustee is a person or firm that holds and administers property or assets for the benefit of a third party. They may be appointed for a wide variety of purposes, such as in the case of bankruptcy, for a charity, for a trust fund, or for certain types of retirement plans or pensions.
