The volume contains the minutes of the monthly, special and annual meetings of the St Stephen's Presbyterian Church (Maryborough) Committee of Management from 9th February 1905 and last recorded for October 1919.

The volume also has an excerpt from the Annual report year ending 31-3-1889, which is from the Committee and concerns the information given at that meeting by Mr William Walker with reference to the Church Property in section 88 as well as a copy of the State Accident Insurance Office Workers' Compensation Policy, copies of letters notifying of donations to the Church from various benefactors and deceased estates are stuck into the front of the volume and newspaper clippings featuring the activities of the Committee, dating mostly from 1889-1905, are found throughout.

Copies of the Annual reports of the St Stephen's Presbyterian Church (Maryborough) are affixed throughout the volume with the earliest being for the 38th for year ending January 1st 1905, and the latest found from 46th for year ending December 1912.  Each Annual report contains an official report of this, and other, Committees.

The volume also contains a typed letter in the form of a poem by Laura Chesters entitled The Valley Church Aid and a statement of net income from the September 1939 Butterfly Fete tipped in; copies of handwritten and typed Annual reports of the Ladies Church Help Society of the Valley Methodist Mission (1938-39, 1940, 1942, 1943 and 1944/45) ; includes lists of names and addresses.  The date of the last Annual meeting is 1945, which are the last minutes in the volume.

The volume contains handwritten minutes of monthly and annual meetings of the Ladies Church Help Meetings, Fortitude Valley, from 24th August 1955 to 27th September 1961.

There is also a typed Director's report dated February 7th 1962, and signed by J. Tainton, Director, tipped in which reports on:

  • the Methodist Children's Homes (Cottage homes and Margaret Marr home),
  • 'our children' reporting on successful education examination results,
  • our properties (buildings and grounds at Bardon, Aspley and Margaret Marr home),
  • Gifts (gifts of food, clothing, Christmas gifts, blankets sheets etc carried for free by Queensland Railways),
  • Toombul homes (2 homes "Moore" and "Stewart" almost complete),
  • Officials (change of address of the Director and the new business manager).

Several annual reports are tipped in the volume as well as reports and financial statements of the "Friends of the Children" dated 1961.

The volume contains the minutes of meetings of the Laidley Methodist Order of Knights, held at Court of the Southern Cross, from the 9th June 1930 to the 21st August 1936.

The volume begins with the minutes of a 'special' meeting held on 6th June [1930] and called by Rev. H.J. Potter to decide upon the formation of the Methodists Girls Comradeship and the Methodist Order of Knights. Regalia of both Comrades and the Order of Knights was shown and explained by Rev. Bath.  It was decided to form a Court.

The following months meetings were concerned with the installation and Initiation ceremonies for the Court No. 75.  This ceremony took place and installation of members is reported in the Minutes of the meeting held July 5th 1930.  From this date onwards in this volume the Minutes are those of the Court, and from the regular meeting held on 14th July 1933 the Court is called the Court of the Southern Cross, No. 75. Methodist Order of Knights.

The volume contains the minutes of the quarterly meetings of the Laidley Methodist Circuit from the 12th October 1936 to the 11th October 1957.

The volume also contains:

  • a copy of  'Circuit Notes' cut out and stuck in the back cover and pages.  These date from 1942 and are accompanied by newspaper cuttings from 1942 and 1944, with the November 14th 1942 cutting titled 60 Anniversary Celebrations Laidley Methodist Church,
  • Tipped into the back of the volume are copies of Laidley Circuit - Plan of Services covering November 1956-January 1957 and another covering August to October 1957.  These also give information on the Leaders and Quarterly Meetings and include financial information, names of preachers, visitors from other Circuits and helpers.  Also included is a typed letter/Memorandum to Circuit Stewards from the Methodist Connexional Offices, Epworth House Brisbane on Methodist Church of Australasia - Queensland Conference' letterhead and dated 26th March 1952
  • Two hand written letters of condolence are also tipped in, one to the memory of Mr W.S. Brimblecombe who was "instrumental in the establishment of the Forest Hill Methodist Church and gave it 41 years of service" and one to Mr Charles Squire, 'in connection with Thornton as Trustee and Officer and with Laidley.'
  • An undated copy of a pamphlet from the Department of Evangelism and Christian Social Order is also included.

The Advisory Committee is also referred to as just the Connexional Expenses Committee.  In the front of the volume is a copy of a typed ‘Circular’ dated September 1929 to Members of the Executive Committee of the Queensland Methodist Conference concerning the need to appoint a Committee to ‘consider matters connected with the Office of the Connexional Secretaries as to whether some economies can be affected in the Overhead expenses of Departmental Offices’.

There is also a report concerning the North Rockhampton Circuit’s property.

The volume contains typed minutes of the meetings of the Property & Loan Fund Committee for the period from the 15th January 1949 to the 30th March 1955.  From December 1949 up to and including the meetings of 27th August, 1951, the name of the Committee alters slightly to Property Committee, with meetings taking place at Epworth House. (Epworth House was the headquarters of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, on the cnr of Albert Street and Burnett Lane, Brisbane City).

Included are the minutes of a special meeting on the 16th June 1953: ...meeting of the Committee appointed to give consideration to the use of the site at Nundah Walkers Way usually known as Zion's Hill.

The volume contains typed minutes of the meetings of the Property Committee, for the period from 4th May 1955 to 5th December 1957.  Spine title of bound volume has the name slightly different: Minutes of the Property & Loan Fund Committee.

The Committee name changes through this period: in July 1955 it is known as the Property and Loan Fund Committee; from February 1957 it is known as the Property and Loan Fund Committee; from May 1957 it is known as the Property and Finance Committee; from October 1957 it is known as the Finance, Property and Loan Fund Committee.

Throughout the volume there are minutes of meetings of combined Committees (from August to November 1956 the meeting is of the combined Property and Finance Committees and on 19th November 1956 the combined meeting is of the Property and Loan Fund and Finance Committees). 

Included in the volume are:

  • a letter to the Rev. Cyril A Read c/ Methodist Church Offices from Morris Fletcher & Cross (solicitors) dated 9th September 1955 concerning erosion issues at the Wynnum property;
  • a letter from Morris, Fletcher and Cross re Parsonage Trusts dated 20th December 1955;
  • a summary of a meeting with the Minister of the Southport Circuit which took place on the 13th December [1955] concerning a gift of land and correspondence concerning it;
  • a letter to the Secretary, Queensland Council of Churches from Morris, Fletcher and Cross, dated 6th January 1956 concerning matters concerning copyright.

Most meetings are held in Epworth House but several take place in Wesley House.

Includes typed ‘Statement of income and expenditure for the year 1943’ of the “Queensland Methodist Times”.  Title page title: “The volume contains the minutes of the proceedings of the Joint Committee of the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches on Co-operation in Home Mission Work, Brisbane Queensland 1917” : from 26th October 1917 to the 23rd August 1920, and includes copies of letters, on Presbyterian Church of Australia, State of Queensland letterhead, from George Ewan convener per Home Mission Committee to the Acting Secretary Joint Committee Methodist Book Depot, Brisbane from 1920 (and their reply) tipped in. 

From circa 1934 the Committee’s name changed to the Methodist Times Committee, with typed minutes stuck in from 8th May 1934 to the 21st of March 1945, Methodist Times and Sub-Committee.

There is a last note in the minutes: “as the Methodist[s] are uniting [on the] 23rd June with the Presbyterian and Congregational Churches this will be our last meeting as a Methodist Guild we will now be known as the Bayside Uniting Church Parish Ladies Fellowship Manly”.

The volume contains the minutes of meetings of the Methodist Church of Australasia's Parsonage Trustees, from February 1914 to February 1962. 

The volume begins with a report and the annual report of Lindum Methodist Sunday School (Feb 14th,1914-March 14th, 1915).  The volume has a title page stating: Charles Salway, Secretary Lindum Sunday School 7.2.1914.

Tipped into the front of the volume is a newspaper article from Waterloo Bay Leader dated Friday August 8, 1941, calling for tenders for the painting and repair of the Methodist Parsonage in Kingsley Terrace (Manly).  Other letters and instructions are bundled with this clipping and are relevant to this event. The minutes are all concerning the Wynnum Circuit and date from 1922-1962. Most of the volume is empty.

Five volumes contain the minutes of the Ladies Guild, Lota Church (Methodist Church of Australasia), for the period from 1944-1948; 1951-1963.

The first volume of minutes has the statement: 'after a lapse of many years' the Ladies Guild at Lota has restarted.  The 'Foundation' monthly meeting was held on the 15th of June 1944.

  • Vol.1 = from the 15th of June 1944 up to and including the 20th of May 1948
  • Vol. 2 = from the 16th of May 1951 up to and including the 17th June 1953
  • Vol. 3 = from the 15th of July 1953 up to and including the 18th May 1955
  • Vol. 4 = from the 15th of June 1955 up to and including September 1958
  • Vol. 5 = from the 1st of October 1958 up to and including the 6th August 1963

Lists of members, names and addresses are written in the last pages of each volume, volume 4 has letters and receipts in an envelope tipped into it, some volumes have newspaper clippings featuring the Guild stuck in.

The papers consist of documents relevant to the preparation for the Seventh Synod in 1983:

  • Six (6) letters from the Secretary of the Synod (1984), Duncan Harrison, on behalf of the Synod Arrangements Committee, to retiring Reverends, acknowledging their intentions, respecting their service and inviting them to a dinner in their honor on the 10th October 1984: Rev. N.R. (Nevin) Stoddart, Rev. C.S. (Cedric) Duffie, Rev M.L. (Myron) Cheney, Rev. L.J (Les) Tilse, Rev. A.K. (Tony) Telgenhof, all dated 20th September 1984. There is a thank you letter (accompanied by the original to which it is the reply), from Rev. Cedric and Mrs Florence Duffie to Duncan Harrison.  There is also a letter on Uniting Church in Australia, South Moreton Presbytery letterhead from C.W.K. Stewart, Secretary UCA Queensland Synod to Duncan [Harrison] concerning the attendees to be honoured at the dinner.
  • A collection of biographical and historical information supplied to Duncan [Harrison] on various Church leaders, specifically:
    • Oliver James Brandon (2 different documents) (these documents are accompanied by Duncan Harrison’s original letter requesting the supply of information on the ministry of Rev. Oliver Brandon),

The papers consist of documents relevant to the preparation for the Eighth (8th) Synod in 1984, including correspondence, hand written notes, minutes and many records of discussions all tied to the 8th Synod held on the 5th-12th October 1984 in Brisbane.

Rev. Duncan Harrison was Secretary of the Synod and convener of the Synod Arrangements Committee, and therefore the main correspondent/recipient of correspondence.

While much of the correspondence and meetings were held to do with the practicalities of organizing such a large event, there were other more specific discussions on topics such as Aboriginal people, the Liturgy (from the Assembly Commission on Liturgy), ie the wording of the Lord’s Prayer, restructuring Synods after that of 1983 (from Rev. Doug McKenzie), mental health (a letter from the group GROW) and a newspaper article accompanied by letters concerning homosexuals serving in the Church.

The papers consist of documents relevant to the preparation for the Eighth (8th) Synod in 1984, including: nomination forms, profiles of nominees, and correspondence concerning the 1984 Synod.  Nominations were requested for Committee, Board, or Commission members ahead of the 1984 and 1985 Synods. 

There is also a document giving the profiles of nominees for the 7th Synod in October 1983 (listed are the Presbytery nominations (8) and separately the nominations from Synod in Session-Ministers (16)). A list of 12 names being the Ballot for Board of Parish Services (7th Synod) and accompanying profiles page.  A list of names being the Ballot for Moderator-Elect (7th Synod) to take office at the 1st session of the 8th Synod, accompanied by a profiles page. 34 Nomination forms from the 8th Synod for Representatives to Fourth Assembly in May 1985.  Thirty-two (32) Nomination forms from the 8th Synod for the Council of Synod (Standing Committee).  Nomination forms from the 8th Synod for Mission and Parish Services (1) and (2) Nomination forms from the 8th Synod for Education and Communication.

A letter from Secretary Department of Mission and Parish Services to the 8th Synod Secretary (Duncan Harrison) nominating 2 nominees to the Committee on Doctrine and Liturgy.  Two (2) Nomination forms for the 8th Synod 1984 nominating for position of Moderator-Elect for the 9th Synod 1985. Two (2) Nomination forms, accompanied by two (2) letters from the Presbytery of North Brisbane for the position of Moderator-Elect for the 9th Synod 1985. Two (2) letters, one from the Presbytery of North Queensland and one from the South Moreton Presbytery nominating their representatives for the Committee on Doctrine and Liturgy for the 8th Synod. The papers consist of documents relevant to the preparation for the Seventh Synod in 1983, including Agendas and Minutes of the meetings of the Synod Arrangements Committee, dating from 18th April to 5th September 1983 concerning preparations for the Seventh Synod in 1983. 

The April agenda lists an extensive list of correspondence received from, and to, the Committee and Secretary concerning the activities for the 1983 Synod, including:

  • time for the Queensland Secretary of the Bible Society of Australia to report to the Synod,
  • a display from the Wesley Hospital, the Presbytery of North Queensland,
  • letters from Rev. R.G. Evans on issues of business and reporting decisions of/at the Synod,
  • letters from Rev. Peter Horsfield on a variety of procedural matters,
  • letters from Rev. D.B. Gulley on a variety of similar matters. 

The last set of minutes here report on a variety of business arising matters including Synod electives, moderator’s rooms, hospitality and transportation, the progress of and status of the Synod Celebration, Synod dinners, programmes on evenings during the Synod Bible studies and the opening and closing services.

The title of the report, as printed on the cover of the 24-page spiral bound document is: "Management Profile for a Church with a Mission"

It was the Report of the Management Working Group, appointed by the Fourth Synod to the Secretary of Synod for the Presbyteries-Synod Co-Ordinating Team.  Members of the Working Group:  H.G. Dawson, R.H. Gough and A. Scurrah.  Dated 25th March. 1981. At the head of the cover title is: The Uniting Church in Australia Queensland Synod.

Tipped into the volume are 2 sets of documents 1) Possible ideas for Uniting Church Questionnaire (V. Webb) and 2) a copy of the Management Consultancy - Questions.

The packet also includes 1 folder containing hand-written notes and other documents used to develop the report.  One document, on Uniting Church in Australia Queensland Synod official letterhead, is a letter template signed and sent by Rev. Alan R. Kidd (Chairman, Presbyteries/Synod Co-Ordinating Team) giving a summary " The 1981 Synod resolved to engage a Management Consultancy to advise on the organisation of Synod Boards...."

Each page has the running title as "A record of Baptisms solemnized in connection with the Methodist Church of Australasia in the Laidley Circuit" whereas the cover page is slightly different: 'Record of Baptisms in the Methodist Church, at Queensland Conference in the Laidley Circuit from 1937 to 19--".

A 12 paged typed history of the Laidley Circuit by Rev. Neville Ross entitled:  The Changeful years : a history of the Laidley Methodist Circuit 1876-1963.

According to this document the first service held by Methodist Preachers in the Laidley District was conducted by two Wesleyan Ministers, Revs. Wm. Fidley and S. Wilkinson on 26th August 1858.

This folder contains correspondence and reports concerning the definition etc of ‘Management Profile of the Uniting Church' (aka ‘Management profile of a Church with a Mission’), from and for, Management Profile Working Group from 1980-end of 1981.  One letter from Ron Gough & Co., Financial Services for the Working Group to Reverand D. (Doug) F. Kirkup, Secretary of Synod, Uniting Church (Qld.). 

This Working Group was convened by a letter of the 23rd October 1980, pursuant to resolution 80.24 of the Fourth Synod, handed over their report.  They were to ‘prepare a “Management Profile”’.  The letter outlines the rigor with which the Working Group went about their task.

The other documents in the folder comprise the various responses to the major paper 'Management Profile' which sort Queensland-wide discussion and reports back on a range of issues raised such as the function and names of various Boards, the role of the Synod Secretary, and the office of Moderator. 

The Secretary of the Synod at the time was Rev. D. Kirkup, he is also the Secretary, Presbyteries Synod Co-Ordinating Team.  All reports and response documents are a handwritten number in the top right after the numeral ‘5’: 5 A -5U. 

Of special note is the memorandum from the Chaiman (John Richardson) to Reverand D. (Doug) F. Kirkup, The Secretary, Presbyteries Synod Co-ordinating Team which also contains a copy of the ‘Report and Recommendations of the Church Management Profile Working Group’ (5K).

 Other parts of the Church discussed the Profile and have sent copies of their minutes of such meetings (eg. A meeting of the Ministerial Education Board in July 1981)).
