Personal papers of Lady McKay (nee Beverley Prowse).
Scope and content

Photographic and textual records relating to the life and career of Beverley Prowse (later Lady McKay) who in her early days was a model in Australia and in England, and who, in later life worked on behalf of Australian interests in London. The collection also includes 'The View from Camelot", a proposal for her autobiography (Box 9567).

Administrative / Biographical history

Lady Mackay, nee Beverley Prowse was born in Mackay, Queensland on 27 September 1932. The family subsequently relocated to Toowoomba, and Beverley moved to Melbourne in 1953 to pursue a modelling career. In 1954, she won the Miss Victoria competition, and in 1955 left Australia for London to compete in the Miss World competition. In 1963, she married 70 year old millionaire showman Jack Hylton who died in 1965. In 1973, she married Alick Mackay, deputy chairman of News Internationa (knighted in 1977.) As Lady Mackay, she was well known in Australian circles in London and served on a number of committees including the British-Australia Society, the Order of Australia Association and the Bicentennial Ball Committee of which she was chairperson.
