Photographs of Wujal Wujal elders, Bobby and Jacky Ball, making mullet spears at Thompson Creek. The spears are used by the younger boys of the community to hunt with during the mullet season in September. The spears are made from old stems of bamboo so that they float in the water. Each stem is heated in a fire and hand straightened using a fork in a tree. The end of the stem is then hollowed out and four wire prongs are placed in position. Araldite is then added to hold the prongs in place and grass tree resin is heated over a fire and moulded around the end of the spear. The whole process takes an average of two weeks to complete.
