Series 1: Correspondence (1872-1968)
This series contains letters principally received by Reverend John Mathew, (some photocopies) which were written between 1872 and 1889 mainly from his uncle John Mortimer (1810-1888) and cousin George Anderson of Manumbar Station, located in the Burnett River region, Queensland; other correspondents include his mother Jane and sister Margaret of Wairoa, New Zealand. Later correspondence is to Randloph Mathew from his uncle Alec Mathew (1851-1931) of Geelong, Victoria.
Manumbar Station is located on the traditional lands of the Kabi Kabi and Waka Waka people, west of the range dividing the Mary and Burnett watersheds and just north of the range dividing the basins of the Brisbane and Burnett. It was also home to abundant Bunya trees which every year attracted large numbers of Aboriginal people, welcomed by the Kabi Kabi and Waka Waka, to feast on bunya nuts, to exchange stories, make friends and arrange marriages.
John Mortimer and silent partner Andrew Anderson initially took up the 16,000 acre Manumbar run in 1848, and by 1874 along with is brother Alec had amassed a holding of almost 50,000 acres, on which he ran many thousands of sheep until disease proved it unprofitable, and he reluctantly turned to cattle.
In 1861 a detachment of Native Police shot and killed at least 10 Aboriginal people near Manumbar Station, after which an enquiry was held by a Select Committee at which John Mortimer gave evidence against the Native Police.
After looking for a buyer for almost 10 years John Mortimer sold the lease on Manumbar to Alonzo Sparkes and Lachlan McKinnon, Brisbane butchers, in July 1887, he died the next year.
