This series contains diaries and related ephemera kept by members of the Jolly / Danton families dating from 1912 to 1969. George Jolly who was a keen diariest, kept records of his observations, experiences, events, and holidays; most particularly during the Second World War when his son Norman was serving overseas.

  • Cassette tape of a shipboard diary of Edward Albert Danton who emigrated to Queensland in 1912. Titled 'The voyage of the Roon'.
  • Two diaries kept by George Jolly while serving on the steamship 'SS Wyreema' as a steward between 1915 and 1917 in which he briefly describes the ports visited as the ship sailed along the eastern coast of Australia, as far north as Cairns, and south to Melbourne.
  • 21 diaries or logbooks kept by George Jolly in his role with the BrisbaneTramways and later, the Ipswich Road Tram Depot
  • 20 personal and holiday diaries kept by George Jolly and his wife Winifred (formerly Winifred Danton) of their daily activities in Brisbane and annual vacations.
  • 1918 special notice of circular issued regarding arrangements for soliders on leave to travel for free during certain hours, who have specially issued Anzac Passes.
  • Passport issued in 1924 for George Thomas Jolly and his wife Winifred Mabel Danton, accompanied by their son Norman Edward, 2 1/2 years.

This series contains letters, cards and other items collected by the Jolly / Danton family which record the experiences of Norman Jolly who served with the 29th Infantry Brigade during the Second World War. 

Norman Jolly enlisted in the second AIF on 29 May 1941 and served until 18 April 1946, when he was Lance Sergeant in the 29th Infantry Brigade, service number QX41080. Towards the end of the war he was part of the Brigade’s Intelligence Unit, and in the period after the cessation of hostilities, he remained stationed on Fauro Island, in the Solomon group, with Japanese prisoners of war.

This series contains postcards, photographs & letters written by Hugo Danton, while on active service during the First World War, chiefly to his brother Stanley (Stan) Henry Danton (born 1903), in Brisbane.

Hugo Danton enlisted in the first AIF on 9 August 1915 and was initially assigned to the 25th Infantry Battalion. He was later transferred to the 9th Battalion and while taking part in operations in Albert, France was killed in action 9 April 1917. Hugo is buried at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

This series contains objects relating to Norman Jolly and his parents George and Winifred Jolly.

  • Camp Hill Comforts Fund leather wallet and writing case, embossed with "N.E. Jolly".
  • A small material enclosure containing a lock of hair, presumably relating to George Jolly and his wife Winifred Mabel
  • Captioned 'my mascot' by George Jolly, this item consists of a small envelope containing a gum leaf which has a greeting inscribed on it "Best wishes from WD" likely to be Winifred Danton and kept by George for good luck.
  • Newspaper clipping titled 'Patriotic effort' describing a fund raising event held at the home of George and Winifred Jolly to raise money for the Australian Comforts Fund during the Second World War.
  • Australian Commonwealth Military Forces rising sun hat badge, most likely to relate to Norman Jolly who served with the 29th Infantry Brigade during the Second World War.
  • Commemorative medallion minted for the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War, 1945-2005, issued to eligible veterans in 2005. Stored in its original issue box. Associated with the service of Norman Jolly, 29th Infantry Brigade.

  • Notebook containing verses written by George Jolly to his son Norman while on active service during the Second World War. Continued from the previous book the humorous works also provide a glimps of the activities of the Jolly family during this time.
  • 'Verse my father wrote me' a self published booklet of verse written in 1942-1946 by George Jolly and reintroduced in 1996 by his son Norman Jolly, with illustrations.

This series contains many illustrations by George Jolly and his son Norman. 

George's work dates from his early life in England; his employment aboard passenger steamships prior to, and during the First World War; and letters to his son Norman during the Second World War.

Norman's work illustrated his letters home to family, while he was serving overseas with the 29th Infantry Brigade, during the Second World War.

This series consists of a booklet of newspaper clippings and photographs relating to the wreck of the steamship 'Pericles'. SS Pericles was a UK steam ocean liner and refrigerated cargo ship. She was launched in 1907 in Ireland for the Aberdeen Line for service between Great Britain and Australia via South Africa. When new, she was the largest ship on the route.

Pericles was wrecked in 1910 off Cape Leeuwin, off the coast of Western Australia, but without loss of life. The scrapbook was most likey to have been collated by George Jolly.
