Series 1: Living in Charters Towers during the Second World War (1996-1997)
The Living in Charters Towers oral history project was conducted in 1996 by The Charters Towers Archives and resulted in a number of people who had lived in Charters Towers during the Second World War being interviewed about civilian life during that period. In the Second World War, Charters Towers was transformed into a garrison city with an influx of Australian and American troops and conversion of the city into an armed facility.

Two part interview with Lee Conn. In the first part of the interview, Lee discusses joining the army and coming to Charters Towers; being a mechanic in the army; the various vehicles he worked on; finding entertainment in town, as well as the influence of the American soldiers on the town. In the second part of the interview, Lee talks about him and his wife buying a pub after the war; the hard years after the war ended, and his experiences running a pub in Charters Towers.

Two part interview with Kevin and Margaret Coleman. Mr and Mrs Coleman discuss the conditions for civilians during the war; the Charters Towers black market; the work of a laundress for the American soldiers, as well as their experiences with the American soldiers. Kevin talks about the hard work in the army, as well as working on the aerodrome.

The Coral Sea oral history project was undertaken in 1992 by the Charters Towers Archives for the Coral Sea Celebrations. These recollections were taken from the people who lived through the war years when Charters Towers was on the front line of the war in the Pacific from 1942-1945.
