Conrad M. Kelsall correspondence
Collection
This collection comprises letters sent by Conrad Kelsall to his family in England. Also included are copy photographs of Conrad's father, Theophilus Kelsall, and of the Kelsall family; as well as a copy of an article by Kevin J. Lambkin 'Conrad Kelsall: "Butterflying" on the Little Mulgrave River, north Queensland, in 1903'. The paper discusses the significance of three of the letters in this accession in regard to butterfly collecting in north Queensland at the time. Eight family letters (one referring to investments by Theophilus Kelsall in Queensland properties) are included.
Conrad Moultrie Kelsall (1873-1936) was born in Devon to Theophilus Kelsall and Maria Brutzer. He arrived in Queensland in 1890 and purchased a farm at Riverstone, in north Queensland. He married Piera Migliorini in 1910, and moved to a sugar cane farm at Deeral, south of Cairns in 1913 with their three children. Kelsall was also a keen photographer and collector of butterflies which he supplied to a natural history dealer. The family returned to England, where he died of illness age 63.
