Scope and content

The diary of Nurse Agnes Kathrine Isambert written during her service with the Australian Army Nursing Service from the time of her enlistment, 10 November 1914 and finishing just prior to her deployment on the 'Argyllshire' in February 1916 accompanying wounded soldiers on their return to Australia. Included are three photographs of Agnes, taken c1902, 1914 & 1915.

Administrative / Biographical history

Agnes Katherine (Katherina) Isambert was born in Ipswich 7 April 1874. She graduated as a nurse at the General Hospital Brisbane in 1899 and nursed at the Colmslie Plague Hospital, Wattlebrae Infectious Diseases Hospital and St Mary's Hospital Ipswich. She joined the Australian Army Nursing Service in 1904, a reserve service staffed by volunteer civilian nurses who would be available for duty during times of national emergency. In October 1914 Nurse Isambert was selected to join the staff of the 1st Australian General Hospital, raised at Enoggera by Major (Doctor) David Gifford Croll.
