Neil and Heideman family papers
Collection
Most of the slides were taken by Gilbert Neil and show the life of the Neil family including holidays to the Gold Coast and North Queensland. There are a small number of commercial slides. The historic photographs were taken by Gilbert Neil and others and are connected to the Neil and Heideman families as well as the related Lemon, Welch and Dickinson families. The certificates and invitations include an invitation to wedding and reception of Everil Dawn Heideman to Gilbert Roy William Neil and certificates relating the military service of Lt Reginald O Heideman (Q27637) of the 61st Australian Infantry Battalion and to D. Heideman for service with the American Red Cross. The flags and bunting hung from the Neil family house at 387 Ipswich Road to greet Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, as they passed by during the 1954 Royal Visit.
Gilbert Neil (1930-2022) was born in Wooloowin and grew up in Albion, in his maternal grandparents' residence 'The Dickinsons', and later at Annerley, in a longstanding Neil family house at 387 Ipswich Road. Gilbert attended Churchie and later trained as a dentist at the University of Queensland. His first dentistry job was at South Brisbane Dental Hospital before he went into a private practice at Wynnum. He married Everil Heiderman in 1962 and raised a family in Wynnum, before relocating to Cairns in 1974 where he continued working as a dentist. A life long film and photography enthusiast he keenly documented family occasions and local events. He passed away in 2022.
