On the Brisbane River; view from the Chinaman's Flat near Colinton, Queensland (1873)
Colinton was one of the first stations in the Brisbane Valley to be settled. It was named after the home town 6 miles outside Edinburgh of the Balfour brothers, who were registered as owners of the property in October 1842. Robert Balfour died on Colinton in tragic circumstances in 1843. John Balfour, who was to become a member of Queensland's first Legislative Council, took over management. In 1862, Balfour returned to Scotland to live, after taking into partnership George Edward Forbes, who had been on Colinton for a number of years. Soon afterwards, Forbes bought out Balfour.

On the Beach, Sandgate, Queensland (August 1873)
The painting depicts the small seaside resort of Sandgate, at a time when it was rapidly gaining in popularity as a watering place for Brisbane's day trippers and holiday makers. The settlement was an agreeable drive or ride from town in good weather and boasted the fashionable new Sandgate Hotel. It had been the venue for the Easter encampment of the Queensland Defence Force only a few months before this work was produced.
The painting is mounted in a mat frame.
