Series 1: Diaries (1916-1918)
The series contains three diaries written by George Deviney while serving with the 52nd Infantry Battalion, and includes two letters written by British soldier, J.W. Hunt, who found one of the diaries on the battlefield after the death of George Deviney.
The soldier wrote to Miss Deviney of "Gladsdale", Helidon, Queensland, and later posted two of the diaries to her. The collection also includes the large envelope which contained the diaries.

Diary (23 September 1916 - 28 July 1917)
Small notebook and a manilla envelope endorsed "This book must have remained dry in his pack".
The diary is a record of George Deviney's journey from Brisbane to England and sightseeing in London while on leave. The notebook also contains some pressed Australian flowers and a small piece of ribbon stamped with a picture of a wattle branch and the words "Wattle Day 1917 Maimed Soldiers".

Series 3: Correspondence (1917)
This series contains letters written by George Deviney to his family, at 'Gladsdale' at Helidon in the Lockyer Valley.
In January 1917 he embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements for the 52nd Infantry Battalion aboard the SS Ayrshire, bound for England. His letters describe they voyage around the Australian coast, the ports of Fremantle and Cape Town, and the training camp at Codford, England.
In August 1917, George Deviney proceeded to France where he described his life in the front lines as "my little wet home in the trench" and in September was wounded in the leg by shrapnel. Many of his friends have been wounded including his friend Owen Donlen and he is later hospitalised with influenza. George returned to his battalion, in time for Christmas celebrations in camp.

Series 4: Correspondence (1918)
This series contains letters and cards written by George Deviney to his family, at 'Gladsdale' at Helidon in the Lockyer Valley between January and March 1918.
Following his death in April at Dernanacourt, his best friend Owen Donlen wrote a number of letters and cards to the Deviney family expressing his grief at the death of his best friend, and the details of how he died. Donlen served with George Deviney in the 52nd Infantry Battalion before being transferred to the 49th.
Donlen drowned after accidentally falling into the River Meuse, at Dinant, Belgium on the night of 22/23 December 1918.

Owen Donlen (1917-1918)
Studio photograph of Owen Joseph Donlen (1891-1918) in uniform. Donlen was George Deviney's best friend and died in Belgium on the 23rd December 1918 after being swept into a canal.
The reverse has been annotated with the following:
George Deviney's best made. George was a Presbyterian, signed the pledge, & neve swore. He wrote to his seven sisters "My best pal is firstly an R.C. carried his swag, drinks & uses the finest Aust. language & I'd sooner have him alongside me than anyone else in the unit." They were only parted by death.
[Inscription on grave] in Dinant Belgium. He was drowned after being swept into a canal. His mate gave evidence no drinking had occurred - they were crossing a dangerous causeway. He had come right thru the war & should have been home by this (what a government).
