Series 1: Diaries (1856-1886)
Diaries and notebooks kept by William Landsborough between July 1856 and 1886.
Landsborough details his explorations in search of land suitable for grazing and farming in the region of Broad Sound in 1857, the Comet and Nogoa Rivers in 1858 and the Bonar (Bowen) River in 1859.
In 1861 he was employed by the Victorian and Queensland governments to search for the expedition headed by Robert O'Hara Burke & William John Wills party in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
During his expeditions he is accompanied by a number of other interested parties including Nathaniel Buchanan, Andreas 'Andrew' Diehm as well as Aboriginal trackers and bearers.

Diary (9 July 1856-7 June 1859)
Landsborough described his journey through lands south-east of Mackay. He surveyed blocks, marking and ringing [ring barking] trees along the way. Landsborough noted the type of vegetation, availability of water, and where he encountered local Aboriginal people.
Included in the narrative are sketches of the terrain, as well as distances and directional references.
Although the area had previously been explored by Leichhardt in 1845, it was Landsborough who named Nebo Creek and the nearby mountain, Fort Cooper; Cooper Creek and Bee Creek.
The party also included: James Britton, sailor and Chinang Bobby who he described as a "tall powerful young Aboriginal".

It includes a daily account of the voyage from Brisbane to Albert River, Carpentaria; the cyclone that destroyed their ship, commanded by Captain Kirby; pillaging of the expeditions stores by some of the crew; saving the horses and salvaging the vessel.

The diary appears to have been extracted from the original, dated 4 February - 16 May 1862 [Item 3] but includes further entries not included in that held by SLQ.
Entries begin at Camp 45 Bowen Downs, to Camp 72 and Mr Kays station on the Darling River. During this part of their journey they encountered a number of Aboriginal people; the party ran very short of water and rations, arriving at Coongoola Station on the Warrego River in a very weakened state.

This diary is an account of the journey made by Landsborough as he sought to take up his appointment as Commissioner of Crown Lands and Police Magistrate at Burketown and Carpentaria.
The party was escorted by Wentworth D'Arcy Uhr (1845-1907), Officer of the Native Police with five Aboriginal native police, some accompanied by their wives; John Shilling, coxswain, and George Philips (1843-1921), Government Surveyor.
During the journey which began at Bowen Downs, Landsborough made extensive notes on the country, naming Rain Mount, Parting Creek, Lacy Creek and Kerrs Table Mountain.
When the party arrived in Burketown they found the town in an epidemic of fever and sailed to Sweers Island in an attempt to avoid the illness.

This diary continues the account of Landsboroughs arrival in Burketown and his decision to sail for Sweers Island to avoid the epidemic raging in the settlement.
Their arrival on the island is not welcomed by the Aboriginal inhabitants; many people fall ill with the fever and they have little to shelter them. Their supply ship is also affected and although Landsborough leaves to purchase food and equipment much of it is lost on the return voyage, during unexpected bad weather.

Three questionnaires relating to Aboriginal tribes and their vocabulary, in south east Queensland.
These were circulated in 1878 by Edward Micklethwaite Curr (1820-1889) a member of the Board for the Protection of the Aborigines.
Copy 1 [LP 250]: "An old form. Partly filled by W. Landsborough and afterwards fill out from other information recorded from W.G. White from [sic] of the Logan [River] with which locality and [...] south of Brisbane, was intimately acquainted some years ago. Another form would have been reserved in the latter but there were none in stock. 1879. [signed] W. Landsborough. It refers to country "From Pimpama to the Tweed and for some distance into New South Wales".
Copy 2 [LP 251]: "Copy of form filled up from information supplied by Mr. R. Westaway on of the first settlers of Mooloolah, north of Brisbane". It refers to the country in the vicinity of "Mooloolah, northern country on the sea coast District of Moreton intersected by road from Brisbane to Gympie". [Richard Henry Westway]

In the form of a traditional newspaper with legitimate news headings such as ‘Notice’; ‘Shipping’; ‘Commercial’, ‘The War (by Telegraph)’, the editor mocks the current activities of Landsborough and his supporters to have Landsborough re-instated as Police Magistrate and belittles the ‘gentlemen’ of the Norman [Normanton].
Billy Intelligent, is a thinly disguised reference to William Landsborough.

Enclosed is a single Admittance ticket to the Castlemaine Railway Banquet at the Market Hall on Wednesday the 15th October 1862, and an envelope from the Society to contain both the letter and the ticket.
