Series 13: Correspondence (1932-1964)
This series includes letters written by Henry Lamond to his sons while they served abroad during the Seond World War; letters from Arthur Campbell of Glencoe Station; general correspondence with publishers and radio stations regarding the publications of Lamond's stories and the broadcasting of his talks.
Flight Sergeant, Henry James Lamond (1915-1942) first served with 15th Infantry Battalion before being released to join the RAAF in June 1940. In February 1942, he was one of 3 crew aboard Blenheim aircraft IV Z9713, 211 Squadron, engaged in escort duty for a convoy off the east coast of Sumatra, which was intercepted by the enemy and all crew were declared missing, believed killed. Although the family repeatedly asked for confirmation of his death, the authorities were unable to comply until after the end of the war, with the hope that his fate would then be discovered - possibly aided by local people or taken prisoner of war. Representations were made via Senator W J Cooper federal parliamentarian, to the Minister for Air, Arthur Drakeford. Interviews of crew at the time were inconclusive and the search officially abandoned in July 1950.
Lieutenant William MacMillan Lamond (1920-1990) served in New Guinea and Bougainville, with 5th Australian Division Signals Company.
